Dog registration coming up: Make sure your details are correct
Please let us know if your dog has had a:
- Change of ownership
- Change of address (inside or outside our district)
- Change of owner's contact details
- If your dog has passed away

Rāhui in place for Whangamatā
Kaumātua have placed a rāhui from Thursday 1 May following a tragic accident.
As a sign of respect, the community is kindly asked to refrain from recreational activities such as fishing, kaimoana (seafood) collection, swimming, surfing and boating at the beach and harbour.
The rāhui will be lifted at nightfall on Saturday, allowing beach activities to resume on Sunday 4 May.
We extend our condolences to the whānau, friends and Whangamatā community during this difficult time.
Conserve water notice – Coromandel Town
Due to ongoing storms reducing flow to our treatment plant and significantly lowering reservoir levels, we kindly ask all Coromandel Town residents to continue conserving water.
Please limit water use wherever possible.

Economic Development Survey for Local Businesses
Our Council is running an Economic Development Survey for local businesses.
We want to hear from businesses across the district about the support they receive from our Council, current business sentiment and ideas for future improvements.
The survey is open until Saturday 31 May 2025 and takes just 5-10 minutes to complete.
Your feedback will help guide future Council decisions and economic development strategies.

Update: State Highway 25 Tapu-Ruamahunga
Yesterday, Thursday 1 May, State Highway 25 at Tapu-Ruamahunga was closed due to a slip. We understand how frustrating these disruptions can be for our community, and we want to thank you for your patience and understanding.
Please be assured that our Council continues to strongly advocate to central government for greater investment in improving the resilience of our State Highway network.
The affected slip sites will be closely monitored over the coming days. In the meantime, we urge all drivers to take extra care when travelling through the area.

Repair and maintenance updates
Streetlight outages in Whangamatā
Streetlight outages in Whangamatā are currently affecting the area, likely due to an issue with the power supply.
Efforts are underway with suppliers to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.
Thank you for your understanding and patience as this is addressed.
Ruamahunga Boat Ramp closed
Please be advised that the Ruamahunga boat ramp is closed for repairs and maintenance from until Friday 16 May 2025. The ramp is fully inaccessible to the public, with the site fenced off and signage in place for safety.
We encourage you to use the Waiomu boat ramp or the Kōpū boat ramp on the way into town while these works are underway. This month we’re giving away free day passes for the Kōpū boat ramp, see details below.

Tairua Refuse Transfer Station (RTS) - Limited service
Repair work is scheduled for Wednesday 7 May and Thursday 8 May at the Tairua Refuse and Recycling Transfer Station (weather permitting). During this time, we will only be able to accept refuse that can be unloaded by hand.

Free day passes for Kōpū recreational boat ramp
Fancy a day out fishing? It’s easier than ever off the new Kōpū boat ramp. Until 28 May we’re giving away free day passes for the Kōpū boat ramp. Simply pick up your pass at Kōpū’s local bait and tackle shops, as well as the Thames Council office. You can launch in any tide if your boat’s under 5-metres. Or for bigger boats, two hours either side of low tide.

Keep Your Wheelie Bin Secure with a Lid Latch
Concerned about your wheelie bin tipping over on windy days and spilling its contents? You can now purchase a lid latch for just $10 from any of our Council offices.
The latch is designed to keep your bin lid securely closed until collection. One end loops through the bin handle, while the other hooks under the lid. The latch automatically releases when the bin is emptied by the truck.

He Mahi Tahi mō te Pae Tawhiti – Working together for the future
Last week, a significant milestone was reached with the signing of the lease for 101 Lindsay Road, the future site of the Whangamatā Community Marae and Wellbeing Hub.
The occasion was marked with a blessing of the whenua, honouring the journey ahead.

Reporting invasive plants
Biosecurity New Zealand is asking gardeners and pond and aquarium owners to be on the alert for invasive freshwater pests, water hyacinth and salvinia, and to report any sightings.
Salvinia and water hyacinth are notorious for rapidly growing into dense, floating mats that can quickly smother water surfaces. They pose significant threats to our waterways, and it is vital to avoid introducing them into ponds or aquariums.
If you spot either of these plants, please contact Biosecurity New Zealand immediately on freephone 0800 809 966 or online here, and they will safely dispose of them, free of charge.

Representing Mercury Bay on the global stage
The Mercury Bay Museum has received multiple national and international awards for its public archaeology work, leading to an invitation to present at International Kongress of Underwater Archaeology (IKUWA8) in Belgium in October 2025.
The team will share their HMS Buffalo project as a standout example of community-led underwater heritage research.
To support this opportunity, the Museum is hosting an “Under the Sea” quiz night on Friday 23 May at the Whitianga Airfield.
