Whitianga Wharf pontoon replacement

The pontoon on Whitianga's waterfront is being replaced with a safer, more accessible version.

Whitianga Water Supply Strategy

The Whitianga water supply study began in April 2022 and is being carried out to develop a long-term strategic plan
to secure public water supplies in Whitianga.

Whitianga Esplanade Redevelopment

This project - about improving the waterfront area in Whitianga, to allow for the growth in activities there and alleviate health and safety issues - has been stopped at the recommendation of the Mercury Bay Community Board, confirmed by Council, in August 2026.

Wharekaho Water & Wastewater Extensions

The community of Wharekaho asked Thames-Coromandel District Council to consider connecting their properties to reticulated water and wastewater systems. A proposal was costed and now the community is being consulted on funding options.

Sherriff Block Development

The Sherriff Block in Whitianga is being developed as the site for multiple recreational uses over a 10-year period.

New Whitianga Refuse Transfer Station

A new Refuse Transfer Station (RTS), incorporating a Resource Recovery Centre, is being constructed on Moewai Road in Whitianga.

Matarangi Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade

We are upgrading the wastewater treatment plant to cater for increased demand.

Matarangi multi-sport facility proposal

We're seeking feedback on a proposal to convert one of Matarangi's tennis courts into a multi-use sports facility, catering especially for netball and basketball.

Cooks Beach Stormwater Ponds - Grass Carp

Our Council has received resource consent from the Department of Conservation to release grass carp into the two stormwater ponds in Cooks Beach as a means to control vegetation growth that impairs pond function and diminishes the visual appeal of the ponds.

Buffalo Beach Rock Wall Extension

Erosion from Cyclone Gabrielle took out a section of the Buffalo Beach foreshore approaching State Highway 25.
We are extending the existing rock protection by about 30 metres north while gradually tapering it to help minimise the ‘end effects’ of wave action on the end of the proposed wall, a byproduct of all coastal hard structures.
