Matarangi Stormwater Improvements

  • Project typeStormwater infastructure
  • Project value$3.2 million
  • Completion Date30 June 2032

The Matarangi Stormwater Improvement project is a Council investment into improving stormwater drainage in Matarangi.

To help with the delivery of this programme of capital work, our Council has formed the Matarangi Stormwater Community Engagement Team, consisting of elected members, residents, and staff. We've carried out initial flood-modelling work, and we've heard from residents, to help identify key areas subject to flood risk.

$3.2 million has been allocated in the 2024-2034 Long Term Plan (LTP) for the work to take place, to be staged from 2025/26 to 2031/32.

Next stages:
  1. Review of the identified key issues/areas - We have identified 19 areas based on feedback from the community members as well as from our initial flood-modelling work.
  2. Conduct a structured decision-making process to prioritise each of these areas based on criteria such as flood risk, environmental impact, public safety, infrastructure and engineering needs, cultural aspects, legislative compliance, costs, benefits, feasibility, and practicality.
  3. Agree on a prioritised list of proposed projects that can be incorporated into the Council’s long term capital projects plan – work ongoing over a seven-year period as programmed in our LTP (see the table below). We'll be engaging suitably qualified specialist professionals as part of this project identification, scoping and prioritisation process, to provide technical advice.

These three steps are expected to carried out over a period of approximately four months beginning in late August 2025 and need to be completed before beginning the design and construction of the physical works.

Flooding around Matarangi Drive

We are aware of surface flooding issues around Matarangi Drive and the concerns that residents have around this. Please note the following:

  1. The issue of the roadside swales has been investigated as part of the overall stormwater improvement project, including Matarangi Drive and the roundabout with Hamiora and Harbour View Drive.
  2. Our Council's Roading team has carried out further inspections and has confirmed the swale refurbishment works in this area will begin in August/September 2025 as part of our Roading team's normal operational work.
  3. The capital project (as detailed above in the Matarangi Stormwater Improvement Project) will comprise design and installation of appropriate stormwater management infrastructure (for example catchpits, new pipes etc.) as recommended by the engineering designs. [for the entire town stormwater project or just the Matarangi Drive bit?]
  4. Two of the 19 identified areas include the drainage at the roundabout and the repair of swales on the northern side of Matarangi Drive to drain to the roundabout.
  5. Based on the prioritisation of the 19 areas we will be able to inform the community of when these works may take place.
