Going boating? Find out about our new QR code payment system
If you're heading out on the water, we've launched a new, easy-to-use payment system to pay for boat ramp and trailer parking fees – right at the ramp.
Simply scan the QR code with your mobile, using your QR scanner app, using Google Lens or camera, open the browser link, then follow the steps to make your payment on the spot, using using your credit card, Google Pay or Apple Pay.
We have signage in place at all nine ramps with a unique QR code for each ramp, and easy-to-follow instructions for scanning, paying and downloading your receipt. Instructional flyers are available at boat ramps as well as Council offices.
You can also watch our handy 'how to' video guide above and download our Frequently Asked Questions at the right of this page.
You can download copies of the flyers for each boat ramp below:
Matarangi Boat Ramp | Purangi Boat Ramp | Royal Billy Boat Ramp, Pāuanui | Tairua Boat Ramp | Te Ariki Tahi/Sugarloaf Boat Ramp | Whangamatā Boat Ramp | Whangapoua Boat Ramp | Whitianga Esplanade Boat Ramp | Whitianga Robinson Rd Boat Ramp.
If you don't have a smartphone, you can still pay in person at our Council offices and participating retail outlets (scroll down to see the full list).
Our Council compliance officers will have an app to scan and enter licence plates to check that there’s a valid pass. For the next 12 months, we’ll also be checking for valid permits on drawbars. All your current permits will remain valid until they expire.
The new system replaces physical ramp permits at the nine Council-managed ramps below.

Changes for our boat ramp and trailer parking fees
As a result of the Annual Plan consultation process and the feedback we received, our Council has adopted new boat ramp and trailer parking fees that places more of the cost of maintaining these facilities on the users rather than general ratepayers.
Types of passes
There are two types of passes available that can be used at the fee applicable boat ramps.
Combo Passes
- This allows you to launch and retrieve your vessel, park your vehicle and trailer in a parking space designated for boat trailer parking. Please note Council cannot guarantee the availability of parking spaces on any given day.
- $30 per day
- $115 per year
Launch Only Passes
- This allows you to launch and retrieve only. Ideal if you plan to take your trailer home or have an amphibious vehicle e.g SeaLegs
- $15 per day
- $45 per year
