East Coast Recreational Boat Ramps

1. Whangamatā Boat Ramp

Beach Road (North end)

Located on the southern side of Whangamata Harbour, this is a relatively large (6-lane+) ramp of compacted sand metal construction. It is an all-tide facility with a floating pontoon at the western end of the ramp to assist in loading/unloading of passengers and equipment from vessels.

The ramp caters for vessel lengths of up to 9m with relative ease. While sheltered from most prevailing winds, the ramp has some exposure to stronger northerly winds, but this can be generally accommodated with the availability of the floating pontoon.

Limited parking for several trailer combinations is available immediately adjacent to the ramp. Ample parking for more than 100 boats and trailers along with public toilet facilities is available on a dedicated boat trailer parking reserve approximately 40 metres away on Harbour View Road.

Whangamatā town centre is approximately 1km away offering a full range of facilities, petrol stations, various cafes, restaurants, shops, vehicle/marine service facilities and an Information Centre. A commercial/industrial area including a supermarket is also available approximatley 500 metres from the ramp.

Care needs to be taken when navigating within the harbour and crossing the entrance sandbar where shifting sands, strong currents and unpredictable swells can pose some challenges. Local guidance or bar crossing knowledge is recommended.

2. Royal Billy Point Boat RampPāuanui

North End of Vista Paku

Located on the eastern side of Tairua Harbour this is a relatively large, 4-lane concrete all-tide facility with a central floating pontoon to assist in the loading/unloading of passengers and equipment from vessels.

The boat ramp caters for vessel lengths of up to 9m with relative ease. While sheltered from most prevailing winds, the ramp has some exposure to stronger southerly winds but this can be generally accommodated with the availability of the centrally-located floating pontoon.

The ramp has ample parking, allowing for more than 100 boats and trailers. It also offers public toilet facilities.
Pāuanui Shopping Centre is approximately 2km away, offering a petrol station, various cafes, restaurants and shops, vehicle/marine service facilities and an Information Centre.

Care needs to be taken when navigating within the harbour, especially crossing the entrance sandbar where shifting sands, strong currents and unpredictable swells can pose challenges. Local guidance or bar crossing knowledge is recommended.

3. Pleasant Point Boat Ramp – Pāuanui

Western end of Pleasant Place

Located on the eastern side of Tairua Harbour this is a 2 to 3-lane concrete ramp. It has all-tide access through a marked navigation channel for smaller vessels of up to 5m but is capable of accommodating larger vessels. Restricted access 2 hours either side of low tide is recommended for safe navigation.

With its location in the upper harbour basin, it generally caters for smaller recreational vessels and personal watercraft. While sheltered from most prevailing winds, the ramp has some exposure to stronger southerly winds.

The ramp has ample parking for boats and trailers along with public toilet facilities.

Pāuanui Shopping Centre is approximately 1km away, offering a petrol station, various cafes, restaurants and shops, vehicle/marine service facilities and an Information Centre.

4. Tangiteroria Boat Ramp — Pāuanui

End of Tangiteroria Lane

It is located on the eastern side of Tairua Harbour, approximately 1.6 km south of the Pauanui township.

This is a 2 to 3-lane concrete ramp. It has tide access 1-2 hours either side of high tide and is only suitable for smaller, shallow draft vessels. With its location in the upper harbour basin, it generally caters for smaller recreational vessels and personal watercraft. While sheltered from most prevailing winds, the ramp has some exposure to stronger northerly winds.

The ramp has ample parking for boats and trailers but no other facilities are available on site.

Pāuanui Shopping Centre is approximately 2km away, offering a petrol station, various cafes, restaurants and shops, vehicle/marine service facilities and an Information Centre.

Care needs to be taken when navigating within the harbour where shifting sands can pose challenges.

5. Tairua Boat Ramp

Wharf Road Tairua

Located on the western side of Tairua Harbour, this is a relatively large concrete all-tide facility with two floating pontoons to assist in loading/unloading of passengers and equipment from vessels. The ramp caters for vessel lengths of up to 9m with relative ease.

While sheltered from most prevailing winds, the ramp has some exposure to stronger easterly winds but this can be generally accommodated with the availability of the centrally-located floating pontoons located either side of the ramp.

The ramp has parking for more up to 40 boats and trailers along with public toilet facilities.

There is a bakery approximately 100 metres away on the corner of Wharf Road. The main shopping centre of Tairua is about 1km away offering a petrol station, various cafes, restaurants and shops, an automotive service centre and an Information Centre.

6. Paku Boat Ramp —Tairua

The Esplanade off Paku Drive

Located on the northern end of Tairua Harbour adjacent to the Tairua Marina Complex, this is a 2 to 3-lane concrete ramp. It has all-tide access through a marked navigation channel for vessels of up to 9m. While sheltered from most prevailing winds, the ramp has some exposure to stronger south-westerly winds.

While there is limited parking immediately adjacent to the ramp, there is ample parking for boats and trailers available to the north along the Paku Drive foreshore and east along the esplanade foreshore. Public toilet facilities and a cafe are available adjacent to the ramp.

The main shopping centre of Tairua is about 1km away offering a petrol station, various cafes, restaurants and shops, an automotive service centre and an Information Centre.

7. Pūrangi Boat Ramp – Cooks Beach

Located at south end of Captain Cook Road.

Located in the Pūrangi Estuary this is a 4-lane concrete all-tide facility with a central floating pontoon to assist in loading/unloading of passengers and equipment from vessels. The ramp caters for vessel lengths of up to 8m with relative ease.

It is sheltered from most prevailing winds that can be generally accommodated with the availability of the centrally-located floating pontoon. There can be stronger tidal currents around the ramp on occasions.

The ramp has ample parking for boats and trailers along with public toilet facilities.

There are limited shop and café facilities approximately 2km away at the northern end of Captain Cook Road.

8. Robinson Road Boat Ramp — Whitianga

Located on Robinson Road

This is a 2-lane concrete all-tide facility with a central floating pontoon to assist in loading/unloading of passengers and equipment from vessels. Located in the upper harbour basin, the ramp provides a good alternative access point out to the harbour entrance as well as the upper harbour.

The boat ramp caters for vessel lengths of up to 9m with relative ease. It is sheltered from most prevailing winds that can be generally accommodated with the availability of the centrally-located floating pontoon.

There is a marked tarseal parking area for boats and trailers immediately adjacent to the ramp and along the grass verge next to it with public toilet facilities. The parking area can become congested during busy summer periods.

Whitianga township is just 1.5km away where a complete range of facilities is available in the form of shops, cafes and fuel facilities.

9. Esplanade Boat Ramp — Whitianga

Located on the Esplanade opposite the Game Fishing Club

This is a large, 3 to 4-lane concrete all-tide facility with a central floating pontoon to assist in loading/unloading of passengers and equipment from vessels. The ramp caters for vessel lengths of up to 9m with relative ease.

It is sheltered from most prevailing winds that can be generally accommodated with the availability of the centrally-located floating pontoon. There are however strong tidal currents around the ramp on both incoming and outgoing tides.

There is a large parking area for boats and trailers on the southern side of the playground adjacent to the ramp along with public toilet facilities. The parking area can be very congested during busy summer periods.

Located directly within the heart of Whitianga township, a complete range of facilities is available in the form of shops, cafes and fuel facilities.

10. Kūaotunu Boat Ramp

Quarry Point adjacent to SH25

This is a two-lane concrete ramp with a rock wall breakwater on its eastern side. It is an all-tide facility, although deeper draft trailer vessels should take care at low tide. The ramp caters for vessel lengths of up to 7m with relative ease. It is sheltered from most prevailing wind conditions.

Limited parking is available for approximately 20 trailer combinations immediately adjacent to the ramp. Public toilet facilities are available on site.

A campground is located nearby, with a shop and restaurant 5 minutes away. The closest fuel Stations are located at Whitianga and Whangapoua approximately 20km away.

While there is no bar crossing, care needs to be taken when navigating the access channel as there are rocks to watch out for at low tide. Leading marks are located on an adjacent hill to assist in navigating the access channel. Local guidance is recommended.

11. Matarangi Boat Ramp

Located off Harbour Drive

Located on the eastern side of Whangapoua Harbour, this is a large, 3-lane concrete all-tide facility with a central floating pontoon to assist in loading/unloading of passengers and equipment from vessels.

The ramp caters for vessel lengths of up to 9m with relative ease. Sheltered from most prevailing winds, the ramp has some exposure to stronger westerly winds, but this can be generally accommodated with the availability of the centrally-located floating pontoon.

The ramp has ample parking for boats and trailers along with public toilet facilities.

There is a cafe and shop approximately 1.5km away on Matarangi Drive.

Care needs to be taken when navigating within the harbour and crossing the entrance sandbar where shifting sands, strong currents and unpredictable swells can pose challenges. Local guidance or bar crossing knowledge is recommended.

12. Whangapoua Boat Ramp

Located on Whangapoua Rd

Located on the north-western side of Whangapoua Harbour, this is a 2-lane concrete all-tide facility with a central floating pontoon to assist in loading/unloading of passengers and equipment from vessels. The ramp caters for vessel lengths of up to 8.5m with relative ease and is sheltered from most prevailing winds.

The ramp has ample parking for boats and trailers and also public toilet facilities.

There is a service station and shop approximately 1.5km away in Whangapoua township.
