Standing strong after Vaianu

This week has been a reminder of just how resilient our district is.

Cyclone Vaianu brought a fair bit of disruption, but people moved quickly to keep themselves and their whānau safe. Our community took advantage of almost 20,000 Council-provided sandbags, stocked up on essentials for their go‑bags, checked in on neighbours, and stayed informed.

A big thank you is owed to road crews who worked tirelessly to restore our local road network. With NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi reopening State Highway 25 at Kereta Hill to one lane this morning, there is huge relief around the district.

If your property has been affected by the storm, please contact your insurance company first to discuss making a claim for repairs, damage or the disposal of storm‑related waste. If you have any questions or you’re not insured, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our Customer Services team - they’re here to help.

What stood out most this week was the strength of our community response. Marae across the district opened their doors; community‑led centres activated without hesitation, and volunteers stepped straight into action. It was a co-ordinated effort centred on care, connection and readiness.

We want to say a big thank to everyone involved - our Emergency Operations Centre team, community volunteers, iwi and all our partner services. Your teamwork helped our district get through the storm safely and with confidence.

Cyclone Vaianu may have moved on, but the way our community pulled together will stick with us for a long time.
