The latest from Mayor Len

I’m still getting my head, and my tongue, around “King’s Birthday”, after calling it Queen’s Birthday for all of my life. Whatever you call it, it’s a long weekend and that’s good enough. I hope that those of you fortunate enough to have Monday off enjoy your break. To the people who are working on Monday, whether it’s in a hospitality business, the caring sector, or delivering some other vital service – thank you for taking care of the rest of us.

I’ve just had a look at the MetService forecast, and it’s looking okay – a few showers on Sunday and Monday. Good enough to get out and about. If you live outside the district, remember: the Coromandel is open for business. Just factor in that extra travel time to get where you’re going. Slow down, enjoy the sights. Stop off somewhere you haven’t been before.

There are a few events on this weekend: Thunder Hop in Hot Water Beach starting today and running all weekend, a dune planting bee in Wharekaho (Simpson’s Beach) on Saturday morning, and markets in some of our towns. Check the Destination Hauraki Coromandel website for more information on things to do.

A few weeks ago, on the occasion of the coronation of King Charles, I planted a tree in Thames. This was to recognise our new king’s commitment to promote sustainable practices and acknowledge the role of volunteers in our communities. A few weeks from now, we’re hosting volunteers around the district to say thank you for the work you do for your community and the Coromandel. Volunteers make so much of what happens in our communities possible; from coaching sports, getting people to medical appointments, running visitor attractions like museums, school board trustees – we’d probably grind to a halt without you – thank you. All you volunteers out there, join us for light refreshments the week beginning 19 June. Check the notice lower down for times and locations. If you’re planning to come to the Thames event, please remember to RSVP by 14 June to rebecca.lacey@tcdc.govt.nz.

kopu.jpg Work on the Kōpū Marine Business Precinct is progressing well, with firmer than expected ground conditions facilitating the siting of piles. The rock revetment is nearly 90 per cent complete with over 200 metres constructed.

The first sheet piles have been installed, forming the cofferdam around the recreational boat ramp area. The construction of the recreational boat ramp will commence after King’s Birthday Weekend.
