Local feedback drives safer speed limits

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi confirms new, safer speed limits ahead of summer for several sections of SH25 in our district —changes driven strongly by local feedback.

New limits will reduce 70–80km/h sections to 50km/h through:

The new speeds will become legally enforceable once signs are installed - expected within the next week.

Know your local dog rules

know your dog rules.jpg

Follow our traffic light signs to understand our dog rules. Our default rule is that dogs are to be kept on lead; so when in doubt, keep your dog on a lead.

Green signs denote exercise areas: You can have your dog off lead, but it must be under control at all times.

Orange signs denote on lead areas: Your dog must remain on lead for times noted on the sign.

Red signs denote prohibited areas: This means no dogs at all. Most beach area prohibitions are either during the dotterel nesting season from Labour Weekend to 1 March, or over the summer period and holiday weekends. We also have areas that are prohibited all year round.

Be a responsible dog owner: check out more dog rules in the comments, plus it’s your last chance to take our dog rules quiz and be in to win a $100 Prezzy Card.

 Work updates and Council notices

Cleaning up Cooks Beach lakes
Cooks Beach grass carp.JPG

Progress continues to restore Cooks Beach lakes. After desludging and cleaning margins earlier this year, crews cleared out excess plant growth in mid-November, wrapping up the final harvest earlier this month.

Our Council has applied to Department of Conservation to introduce grass carp to help manage future growth. We’ve answered their follow up questions and are now waiting on a formal decision. If approved, we expect the car would be introduced until around mid-2026.

Keeping our green spaces tidy

Ever feel like the grass just never stops growing? Spare a thought for our hardworking parks contractors who are out there mowing across our entire Thames-Coromandel district. We are doing our best, but time and growing conditions mean that it is a hard battle.

Thanks for your patience as we work hard to keep our parks looking great for summer.

Here are a few points to keep in mind:

SH25A Kōpū-Hikuai night work next week
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi advises that essential asphalt works will be carried out on State Highway 25A on Tuesday 16 December and Wednesday 17 December from 8pm-5am.

Traffic management will be in place with up to 20-minute delays. Please allow extra time for your journey and follow all on-site signage and instructions from traffic management staff.

We appreciate your patience and understanding while these important works are completed.

Moana Anu Anu Bridge, Whangamatā (SH25) closure
Moana Anu Anu Bridge update Dec_25.jpg

NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) Waka Kotahi's work on the Moana Anu Anu Bridge (also known as Wentworth Bridge) on SH25 near Whangamatā has progressed beyond deck repairs to include replacing three corroded beams.

The bridge has been closed to all traffic since 29 October and is now expected to reopen by 19 December. During the closure, crews are replacing the bridge deck and carrying out essential strengthening work. The need for additional repairs was discovered once the project was underway. New beams are currently being fabricated.

A detour via Mayfair Avenue and Martyn Road remains in place, adding only a few minutes to normal travel times.

Transfer stations cease rainbow sand disposal
Rainbow sand.jpeg

Disposal of recalled rainbow sand products through Council’s refuse and recycling transfer stations ends on Monday 15 December.

Transfer stations in Thames, Coromandel Town, Whitianga, Tairua and Whangamatā have been accepting household volumes of the potentially asbestos-contaminated products for the past three weeks.

However, as asbestos is not usually collected at our transfer stations, the arrangement was temporary and set up specifically to support our community with safe disposal of the hazardous material.

We will continue to monitor product recalls and reassess further needs.

Land Information Memorandums (LIMs) applications
