Tsunami Advisory – Strong and unusual currents expected from midnight

Strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges are expected to hit New Zealand Coasts from 11:59pm tonight due to the location of the earthquake.
This activity will continue for several hours, and irregular tides may persist for up to 12-24 hours in some areas.
The threat must be regarded as real until this Advisory is cancelled.

A National Advisory has been issued following a magnitude 8.7 earthquake off the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia, at 11:25am NZT today.
Coastal areas of New Zealand may experience strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges at the shore. These conditions are dangerous and pose a serious risk to swimmers, surfers, fishers, and anyone in or near the water.
People are advised to:
- Stay out of the water
- Stay off beaches and shore areas
- Avoid harbours, marinas, estuaries, and rivers
