Thames-Coromandel retains top Building Consent Authority rating

Thames-Coromandel District Council has once again demonstrated a high standard of building regulatory performance, following a recent routine assessment by International Accreditation New Zealand (IANZ).
The biennial audit confirmed that our Council’s Building Control Unit (pictured) continues to meet all accreditation requirements and retains its Extra Low Risk status as a Building Consent Authority (BCA). Our Council remains the only territorial authority in New Zealand to hold this rating, reflecting consistently strong processes, engaged and competent staff, and a well-established culture of quality assurance and continuous improvement.
In its report, IANZ stated, “Thames Coromandel District Council BCA has a history of good performance during IANZ assessments and a culture of quality assurance in everything that it undertakes. Looking over the last 10 years, the BCA has demonstrated a pattern of very good compliance with BCA Accreditation requirements.” The report further described the assessment outcome as an “excellent achievement”.
Council’s Building Unit Manager Corinne Hamlin said the result reflected the dedication and professionalism of the Building Team and supporting staff.
“A significant amount of work goes into maintaining this level of performance. Our focus throughout the year is on delivering a customer-focused service while meeting our regulatory responsibilities to the highest standard,” said Ms Hamlin.
“This result gives our residents and ratepayers confidence that Council’s building quality assurance processes are operating at the highest level, while also keeping accreditation costs as low as possible.”
Ms Hamlin said the achievement was particularly significant given the additional demands placed on the team during recent severe weather events. “This year’s assessment was achieved while the team was also responding to severe weather events and undertaking rapid building assessments on affected properties across the district.”
The assessment also highlighted several areas of good practice, including the Council’s internal audit programme, forecasting activities, and improvements made to strengthen continuous improvement since the previous review.
Council’s ongoing accreditation confirms its continued commitment to delivering high-quality building consent and inspection services for the Thames-Coromandel community.
