Connecting seniors to their community and Council

Tucked away to the side of one of Coromandel’s quieter roads is The Colville Junction.

The junction serves the Colville and northern Coromandel community through many means including advocacy, DVD and book libraries, youth initiatives, Colville Harbour Care Nursery, and events such as the Colville festival.

The new and free Kōrero with Care service offers friendly visits, practical support and community connection for residents aged 65+. The aim is to help people stay independent at home while also offering connection and support.

This ranges from IT help, a chat over a cuppa, games and crafts, and in some cases, transport to an event such as the recent Imagine Coromandel Peninsula engagement session at Colville Hall, where Council sought interactive feedback from locals on a long-term vision for the Coromandel.

Colville and its surrounding areas such as Papa Aroha, and Tuateawa north, offer a more rural setting. This means many seniors live independently but can sometimes experience isolation and difficulty accessing everyday support.

Regular connection helps people remain confident, independent and engaged while strengthening the fabric of our whole community. This is especially so when our Council wants to hear from locals about what’s important to them.

The Kōrero and Care service is already up and running but more volunteers are wanted.
