Bylaws adopted by Council

Our updated Dog Control Policy and Bylaw will come into effect on 18 May 2023, after they were adopted by Council at its meeting on 16 May.
In addition, our Council adopted amended bylaws for Activities in Public Places and Advertising and Signs, both to come into effect on 23 June 2023.
Dog Control Policy and Bylaw
The Dog Control Policy and Bylaw seeks to provide adequate opportunities to fulfil the exercise, recreational and socialisation needs of dogs and their owners, while minimising any danger, distress or nuisance caused by dogs.
Key changes include:
District-wide
- removing Kings Birthday and Matariki from holiday weekend restrictions on dogs
- extending the wildlife protection restrictions from Labour weekend to include Easter and Anzac holiday weekends
Coromandel-Colville Community Board area
- establishing the WW1 Memorial Forest in Coromandel Town as a dog exercise area
- prohibiting dogs from Tuateawa Beach and the walkway from Waihirere Drive to protect the Kiwi population
Mercury Bay Community Board area
- amending the restrictions on the south end of Hot Water Beach (where dogs are prohibited from Labour weekend to 1 March including Easter and Anzac holiday weekends) to allow dogs to be walked on leash for the sole purpose of accessing the north end of the beach
Tairua-Pāuanui Community Board area
- prohibiting dogs from all public places on Whakahau/Slipper Island including the Ōtara accessway in the existing Ōtara Bay beach prohibition (Both of these restrictions are in place for the protection of wildlife)
Thames Community Board area
- prohibiting dogs from the southern end of the Hauraki Rail Trail, from south of the Kōpū Bridge to Hikutaia, for the protection of public health and safety
Whangamatā Community Board area
- clarifying the area description for Patiki Bay Reserve
- removing the current off leash area in Ōpoutere (This area on DOC land is no longer safe or suitable for recreation)
Activities in Public Places Bylaw
Key changes include:
- new restrictions on fireworks in public places
- the requirement for organisers of large-scale assemblies to notify our Council
Advertising and Signs Bylaw
Key changes include:
- real estate signs: clarification on when they need to be removed and a reduced height limit on directional signs
- specialised restrictions for changeable message signs
