Why buying local matters

Every time you choose to buy from a local store, dine at a neighbourhood café or hire a local tradie, you’re doing more than just making a purchase – you’re investing in your community.

Did you know our Thames-Coromandel District has a permanent population of around 34,000, yet it triples in peak visitor season. While tourists help, it’s locals like you who keep businesses going through the quieter months.

Local businesses are the heart of our community

They sponsor our sports teams, support our schools and clubs, donate to community causes and create local jobs. When you buy local, you help build a stronger, more resilient community.

Top tip - Skip the online cart:

  • Grab a coffee at your corner café
  • Get that gift from a local boutique
  • Book the services of someone down the road

It all adds up.

Tairua

Glass art.jpg The Tairua Business Association is launching a Buy Local campaign to run over the winter months — traditionally a quieter period for the town — to help boost local spending and support the business community. The campaign will target both locals and visitors, encouraging them to shop, dine and support Tairua businesses from mid-June to early September 2025. It will incentivise consumers to spend $30 or more to enter fortnightly prize draws worth up to $250, plus a chance to win a grand prize of up to $ 1,000 worth of vouchers (all from local Tairua Business Association members).

If you run a business in Tairua but haven’t been approached and want to participate in the Tairua Business Association promotion, please contact Peter Hunt - chairperson@tairua.biz or Matt Juby - finance@tairua.biz.

Whangamatā - extended to 29 August 2025

Bar on tap.jpg Enterprise Whangamata is running a dynamic Buy Local campaign to encourage community spending and support local retailers. The campaign kicked off with hand-delivered flyers to retailers and businesses in the industrial area, including A5 counter cards and A4 window posters.

Shoppers are invited to scan a QR code in-store, which links to a digital form capturing their name, contact details and the business they purchased from. To enter the prize draw, they simply need to spend locally and register. Proof of purchase (receipt or bank statement) is required to claim a prize.

So far, over 650 entries have been received – and due to its success, the campaign is being extended through to 29 August with refreshed promotional material.

The campaign has been promoted through shop visits, website listings, emails to a 1,300+ contact database, and ads in the Whangamata News – helping drive visibility and engagement across the community.

Thames Business Association is also launching an exciting Buy Local campaign.

They have assembled a passionate team of local business owners to shine a spotlight on our amazing local shops, services and eateries – and to encourage locals to keep their spending in Thames.

Look out for our stickers on everything from coffee cups and shopping bags to bumper stickers and posters around town, which will feature “10 Reasons to Buy Local” – an important reminder of the impact every dollar makes.

You'll hear and see their promotion in:

  • Radio ads across the district
  • Ads in The Valley Profile
  • Regular updates on the Explore Thames website and social media
  • Engaging video reels showing the real people behind local businesses – They will be keeping track of engagement, business participation and community feedback and sharing progress.

The Thames Business Association aim to launch mid-July as they are currently applying for extra funding to help cover campaign costs, so more businesses can get involved. The more support they get, the bigger the impact.
