The Thames-Coromandel Mayoral Disaster Relief Fund has been boosted by a $100,000 Government contribution.

Minister for Emergency Management Mark Mitchell announced the funding this week as part of a wider $830,000 package for New Zealand communities impacted by recent severe weather events.

The contribution takes the local relief fund, which closes this week, to $400,000.

Our relief fund is made up from donations and contributions from the National Emergency Management Agency generous individuals and local businesses including IAG, Momentum Waikato, Suncorp, Te Rourou One Aotearoa Foundation and QBE Insurance.

Applications to apply for the fund, or donate to, close at midnight on Friday 6 March and are assessed by an independent panel.

More than 170 applications have been received.

Prioritisation of the fund goes towards families and individuals in our community who have been faced with extraordinary circumstances due to the impacts of the January storm.

Mr Mitchell says the Government wants to make sure impacted communities are supported.

“These contributions will help local authorities tackle the most immediate areas of need within their communities, while the broader recovery efforts get underway,” Mr Mitchell says.

Whangārei District Council, Gisborne District Council, Tauranga City Council, Western Bay of Plenty District Council, Ōpōtiki District Council and Ōtorohanga District Council were also each recipient of $100,000 contributions. Another $30,000 went to Christchurch City Council.

While the fund will go some way to help people impacted by the storm event, the road to recovery is long. It will take time before our district can truly return to normal.

Support is also available and it’s okay to not feel okay. Information on how to get help, and latest updates on our Recovery efforts, can be found on our dedicated webpage www.tcdc.govt.nz/storm-recovery.

People can apply for the fund by using the web form on our Council website www.tcdc.govt.nz/relief or downloading the pdf application and sending it back to funding@tcdc.govt.nz.
