Update, 30 October: A proposal to convert one of three Council-owned Matarangi tennis courts into a multi-use sports facility, providing predominantly for netball and basketball, has received significant support.

The proposal has come from the local community following a survey of more than 30 local residents reflecting strong support for the idea. It also has the backing of Sport Waikato, Mercury Bay Netball and Matarangi Residents and Ratepayers Association.

From 22 September to 10 October our Council carried out its own survey and received 234 responses.

Of these, 197 were in support of the proposal compared to 25 who were not and 12 who were unsure.

Our Council would like to thank all of those people who took part in the survey. We will now aim to work with the local community in their quest to fundraise and support them with grant applications. Future updates will be published on this page.

Matarangi has six tennis court facilities. This includes three Council sites that offer five tennis courts and one pickleball court. The other three tennis court facilities are not Council-owned.

Thames-Coromandel District Council is exploring a proposal to convert one of its Matarangi tennis courts into a multi-use sports facility, providing predominantly for netball and basketball.

The proposal to help reduce barriers to be active has come from the local community following a survey of more than 30 local residents reflecting strong support for the idea. It also has the backing of Sport Waikato, Mercury Bay Netball and Matarangi Residents and Ratepayers Association.

The proposed multi-use court in Matarangi is expected to help cater for local child and adult netball and basketball teams, local families, and visitors.

Local players are travelling to Whitianga or other towns for practice and games and the netball and basketball codes are only expected to grow in years to come.

The proposal suggests the Council tennis courts on Matarangi Drive, near the entrance to Matarangi, as the preferred site.

From 22 September 2025 to 10 October 2025, our Council held a survey asking our wider community what it thought.

If approved, the proposed conversion is expected to be part-funded through grants and other fundraising opportunities.

The survey, that had been available below, has closed.
