Alcohol Bans
Our Alcohol Control Bylaw was adopted in 2018. The bylaw aims to reduce the instance of crime or disorder related to alcohol consumption by controlling where and when people can possess or consume alcohol in public places.
Permanent alcohol bans
Alcohol is permanently banned in some public places in the Thames-Coromandel District. This means a person must not consume, carry, or possess alcohol in these areas unless an exemption or special licence applies.
These rules also apply if you are in a vehicle within the ban area. There are some exceptions in certain circumstances, for example, transporting unopened alcohol from a supermarket to your home.
Schedule 1 of our bylaw shows our permanent and holiday ban areas.
Permanent ban areas apply 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
Holiday ban areas apply during certain holiday periods, for certain days and times.

Temporary alcohol bans
Temporary alcohol bans are sometimes put in place for major events or a particular time of year. These bans are publicised at least 7 days before the ban becomes effective.
