Which way should TCDC go?

Our Council released today three potential options for amalgamating with neighbouring councils, as part of the Government's local government reform programme.

The three options are explained in our Which Way Should TCDC Go? booklet, now available online as well as at our Council service centres and District Libraries.

It includes background information on the Government’s proposal to simplify local government, the process our Council has put in place, maps illustrating the three options, the potential opportunities and challenges of each, the weightings used by Councillors to make their recommendation and a feedback form to provide your preferences.

Feedback on the three options closes on Wednesday 15 July.

State Highway 25/25A update

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises that major storm recovery works at SH25 Pumpkin Hill near Tairua and SH2 Karangahake Gorge are due to be completed this week, marking a significant milestone in the region’s recovery efforts. Meanwhile, work continues to stabilise the underslip at SH25 Kūaotunu Hill, where traffic remains reduced to a single lane under traffic light control.

In Tairua, utility relocation works for the Pepe Stream Bridge replacement project are progressing, with PowerCo currently planning a full-day power outage on Tuesday 30 June for properties south of the bridge. The bridge project will move into its next phase from mid-July, with piling for the new two-lane bridge expected to continue through to early September, although traffic across the existing bridge will remain open throughout the works.

The Government has announced $20 million for resilience improvements at 11 high-risk sites on SH25 around the Coromandel Peninsula. The investment will support retaining walls, drainage upgrades, slope stabilisation and road protection works aimed at improving the reliability and resilience of the state highway network.

A further $65 million has been allocated for the replacement of Kirikiri Stream Bridge on SH26 at Kōpū.

Waka Kotahi will confirm project scopes and delivery timeframes as investigations and design work progress.

Coastal Management at Flaxmill Bay

We recently asked for community feedback on the future coastal management options for Flaxmill Bay, with 72 responses received through both online and in-person engagement.

The feedback showed strong support for retaining the existing geotextile groynes and continue beach nourishment.

It also highlighted several key priorities, including maintaining a wide sandy beach, protecting the coastal road and reserve from erosion, preserving beach access and recreation opportunities, and ensuring value for money for ratepayers. Some respondents also supported removal options, emphasising the importance of allowing natural coastal processes and sediment movement. Ongoing monitoring and regular communication about coastal conditions and outcomes were also identified as important by many participants.

Our Coastal Management Team would like to thank everyone who took the time to share their views. Given the strong level of community support, the preferred option of retaining the existing groynes and continuing beach nourishment will now go to Council. Subject to approval, this approach would be incorporated into future planning and funding discussions as part of the next Long-Term Plan (LTP).
