We’re asking residents, ratepayers, property owners and business operators from Sailors Grave, Tairua town down to Pāuanui and Hikuai to take part in a survey to inform future decisions about potential coastal protection options to protect the wider Tairua area from flooding and the effects of severe weather.

Please take part in our survey to share your experiences of how recent severe weather is affecting, or has affected, your daily life, health, wellbeing, working life or business.

Alongside technical and scientific investigations already underway, your feedback will build a clearer picture of what’s happening on the ground in Tairua.

Understanding community experiences will be important in exploring fair, affordable ways to fund potential coastal protection.

The survey

The survey should take about 10 minutes to complete.

Please note that when we ask questions about your connection to Tairua, we’re talking about the wider area – from Sailors Grave, Tairua town to Pāuanui, down to Hikuai (not just Tairua town itself).

All responses are anonymous and your privacy will be protected. Information will be grouped together and analysed to get a general picture – not to identify individuals.

There’s one main survey, which we’d like all residents and ratepayers to fill in please.

In addition, if you own a business in Tairua, please could you fill in an additional survey. We'd really appreciate your time to make sure we have an accurate picture of the impact of severe weather on businesses.

The survey is open until 13 August 2026.
