Staying safe from sand contamination

Thames-Coromandel District Council is reopening Thames Library on 21 November at its usual time.
Tairua Library reopened on Thursday 20 November.
The closures have been to implement WorkSafe guidance to ensure that the public and staff are kept safe from any possible contact with contaminated play sand.
An investigation into the use of play sand in Council facilities has revealed that products from the recalled list have been used recently in Thames Library, but tests returned negative to the presence of asbestos.
We investigated products used at Tairua Library and found that products from the recall list have not been used there, which is why it reopened on Thursday.
Council has spoken with WorkSafe and followed their guidance in handling the suspected contaminated products.
WorkSafe confirmed that Council’s action taken is in line with guidance from the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment and Health NZ.
If you are concerned about exposure at any location, WorkSafe advises that you should reach out to your medical advisor.
