Community Board Accord reached at Thames-Coromandel District Council
Published on 26 May 2026
A Community Board Accord has been endorsed by Board Chairs and adopted by Council today. The Accord reaffirms our Community Boards as the voice of the local community and sets out the relationship between Council and the Boards.
“Our communities are increasingly engaged in what’s going on around them; we can see that in the turnout to provide feedback for our Annual Plan proposals and in the busy public forums at Community Board meetings,” said our Mayor Peter Revell.
“During the election campaign, constituents told candidates that communities did not feel heard. Restoring that confidence has been a priority for this Council from the outset,” Mayor Revell said.
Since the election, Board Chairs have had a seat at Council and committee meetings with speaking rights, giving greater scope for specific community interests to be reflected.
The Accord adds to this momentum by committing the Council and Community Boards to work together and share a single overriding purpose: to serve the communities of the Thames-Coromandel District by:
- facilitating local decision-making and action by, and on behalf of, communities
- promoting active engagement with communities
- making local decisions on matters within delegated authority
- providing local input into Council strategies, plans and services
- ensuring the delivery of local public services.
The Accord recognises that effective governance in this district depends on Community Boards holding genuine decision-making authority as well as an advocacy and advisory role.
The Accord delegates to the Boards the authority to exercise certain Council powers, responsibilities, or decision-making functions on the Council's behalf, within a defined scope and area. These areas are:
- training and conference attendance for Board members where budget allows
- allocation of community grants
- facilities and property
- parks and open spaces
- economic development
- transport planning.
