Business Cyclone Recovery Grant

Our Council is now ready to receive applications for the Business Recovery Grants for businesses that have experienced significant and sustained disruption because of Cyclone Hale and Cyclone Gabrielle.

BRG.png The central government is funding $25 million in recovery support to businesses in seven North Island regions.

“Our district is administering $1.42m of this fund, which will enable us to further support local business operators who have been suffering in the wake of these storms,” says our Mayor Len Salt.

“We know it has been a really tough time for many of our industries, and we encourage any business that meets the criteria to take advantage of this opportunity for help.”

“Today’s brief closure of State Highway 25 to all traffic is a reminder of the fragility of the roading network in the Coromandel,” says Mayor Len. “Waka Kotahi got it back open to light vehicles pretty quickly, but heavy vehicles will need to take the Thames Coast Road section of SH25 to access the east coast and points beyond. This adds more cost to our local business sector and is another reason our Council is working as hard as we can to get the message to central government that investment in more resilient infrastructure and utilities is critical.”

To be eligible applicants must be experiencing significant cashflow issues due to continued challenges with customer access, ability to source stock, supply chain issues, inability to operate as usual due to the physical damage to equipment or premises, or delays in insurance assessment and repairs.

The grants are to help businesses cover operating expenses and position themselves for a successful recovery.

The $1.42 million our district has been charged with administering is for businesses across the Waikato region who fit the criteria for funding. Applications will be assessed by an independent advisory panel.

You can apply using our easy online form or download a PDF form to fill out online or by hand.

Marketing support

Screenshot 2023-03-08 150812.png Destination Haruaki Coromandel has released Welcome to our World, unplanned marketing activity that they pulled together in the wake of recent weather to instill confidence in travellers that the Coromandel is open and we are ready to welcome them.

The first phase is primarily for awareness and understanding of the "open" message, and the next phase building towards Easter and ANZAC holidays will be more targeted to drive travel.  With the additional support of Tourism New Zealand, Destination Coromandel will be able to feature businesses offering packages. Just a reminder, this doesn't mean a deep discount, but a package is a well-recognised "hook" to attract the attention of those thinking about/planning a break.

Long vehicles banned from Tapu-Coroglen and 309 Roads

Vehicles longer than 12.6 metres are now prohibited from using The 309 and Tapu-Coroglen Roads unless they are are accessing properties on these roads or carrying out vital work such as emergency transportation or authorised repairs.

AdobeStock_529211894.jpeg Our Council has passed new amendments to the restrictions under its Traffic Control Bylaw banning long vehicles from these two rural routes, following the impact of Cyclone Gabrielle on our roading network.

Both roads are narrow, are primarily unsealed and have a number of very tight corners. Long vehicles cannot navigate them comfortably, and trucks have crashed or been stuck regularly in the past. The process to recover a vehicle is expensive and often damages the road. The road can remain closed for hours or days, shutting off people’s access to properties located along that road.

The 309 Road runs from the east coast of the Coromandel south of Whitianga to the west coast south of Coromandel Town. The Tapu-Coroglen Road traverses both coasts of the Coromandel, from Coroglen in the east to the west coast at Tapu.

The closure of SH25A due to storm damage could have exacerbated these issues, as vehicles now have to take a different route to access the Coromandel.

In order to address concerns about these two roads, our Council has agreed on two new restrictions under Clause 9 of the Bylaw, to prohibit vehicles of 12.6 metres or more from using them. We currently regulate the use of Council-controlled roads within our  district through the Traffic Control Bylaw which empowers us to restrict traffic in a variety of ways, by adding new restrictions into the Bylaw’s Schedules.

Signage for the new restrictions will be placed at the entrances to both roads, with advance warning signs placed on the State Highways. These are being manufactured and will be installed soon.

Additional signage on the issues with the roads and the hazards on the route will also be provided at each entrance so that drivers of vehicles not covered by these regulations will be aware of the conditions and the need for being alert to hazards.

We have also contacted transport operators and other businesses to make them aware of the new changes.

Work continues towards SH25A fix

The Kōpū to Hikuai road is incredibly important to the Coromandel, and the closure of state highway 25A is being felt by everyone.

DSHelicopterphotos15Feb2.122104.jpg Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency are focused on getting this highway open as quickly as possible, while prioritising the safety of their crew and the community. There is no short-term fix for SH25A, and a number of options are being explored.

A project team has been established and is focused on developing and assessing the options for the rebuild of SH25A. This includes a Waka Kotahi senior project manager, Beca consultants, who will prepare the detailed options assessment report, and the contractor Higgins, who is currently managing the closure and will construct the access tracks for the geotechnical drilling rigs.

Other companies involved include consultancies who will manage the resource consenting and land access outside the road reserve, if it’s needed.

What are the options being considered?

Several options have been identified so far and they fit into three broad categories:

  • Retreat north and build a bypass around the top of the site.
  • Replace the lost section of road with a bridge.
  • Rebuild the supporting ground with retaining walls.
