Traffic Control Bylaw - Te Ture ā-Rohe Waka Haere

NOTE: On 21 February 2023, our Council introduced new restrictions under its Traffic Control Bylaw. These restrictions prohibit vehicles 12.6 metres or longer from using The 309 and Tapu-Coroglen roads, unless the vehicle is:

  • loading or unloading of goods or passengers at any property whose access is by way of the road
  • providing emergency services
  • undertaking roading maintenance
  • undertaking network utilities maintenance services
  • collecting refuse.

Both roads are inappropriate for long vehicles as they are narrow, are primarily unsealed, and have a number of very tight corners.  Trucks have crashed or been stuck on these roads in the past. The recent closure of SH25A due to storm damage may exacerbate these issues, as overlength vehicle drivers are now forced to follow a different route to access the eastern Coromandel.

In order to address concerns about these two roads, our Council has agreed on two new restrictions under Clause 9 of the Traffic Control Bylaw, to prohibit vehicles of 12.6 metres or more from using them. The restrictions have been added to Schedule 5 ('Traffic Control By Size, Nature or Goods') to the Bylaw.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________ The Traffic Control Bylaw 2017 was adopted by Council on 12 June 2017 and came into force on 1 September 2017.

You can read the Traffic Control Bylaw 2017 here.

This Bylaw rolls together several of our old traffic-related bylaws into one bylaw and allows our Council to set requirements for the control of vehicular or other traffic on any road under its care, control or management. It does not apply to State Highways or the intersections of State Highways and Council roads. Waka Kotahi/The NZ Transport Agency is responsible for these.

The Bylaw doesn't change any of the existing traffic regulations, it just moves them all into one place. For example, if your local street is one-way, this does not change under the Bylaw.

If you feel the traffic regulations on your street need to be changed, you can contact our Customer Services team and lodge a Request for Service and our Roading Team will look at the request to see if it's possible.
