At the Council meeting on 30 October 2018, our Councillors voted to amend the Parking Control Bylaw with respect to parking in Hahei. The changes will take effect from 20 December and will:

  • Make the car parks outside the Hahei store 60-minute timed parking;
  • Make the car parks on Hahei Beach Rd outside the store a stop for the Cathedral Cove bus service between 1 October and 30 April and 60-minute timed parking the rest of the year;
  • Create a drop-off only zone at the beach-front end of Hahei Beach Rd;
  • And, create two mobility car parks directly opposite the beach access.

The changes will take effect from Thursday 20 December 2018.

These amendments to the bylaw were made after discussions with the Hahei Residents and Ratepayers Association and a public feedback process. These diagrams illustrate the changes:

Driving to Hahei and need a place to park? Here are your options for Council-controlled car parks:

Hahei Visitor Car Park

We encourage visitors to Hahei to use this car park which is at the entrance to Hahei.

Our Council has joined with Go Kiwi over the summer to provide a park and ride bus service over our peak holiday period from this car park to the start of the Cathedral Cove walking track at Grange Rd.

To read more about the Cathedral Cove park and ride shuttle visit www.go-kiwi.co.nz and see the poster below.

We are expanding the car park's capacity from the current approx 200 spaces to more than 400 and expect this work to be completed before Christmas 2018.

It is currently free to park there.

In September 2018 we learned our application to the Government's Tourism Infrastructure Fund for improvements in Hahei had been successful. $1,426,841 has been allocated for the Hahei Visitor Car Park upgrade and for improved walking connections between the car park and the beach. Read more here.
