Still time to give feedback on upgrade of Meri Te Tai Mangakahia Reserve, Whangapoua.

09 April 2019

Meri Te Tai Mangakahia Reserve is a jewel in Whangapoua's beachfront but its facilities need to be upgraded and some, including the toilet, are poorly sited.

We've been working with the community on proposals to upgrade the reserve and we're still seeking public feedback on a draft concept plan we've circulated.

The feedback will help us plan how to use a grant from the Government's Tourism Infrastructure Fund to upgrade the toilet and its effluent field.

We're proposing to:

  • Shift the playground and update its play equipment.
  • Move the parking away from the beach edge to allow for the dunes to be planted with suitable coastal species.
  • Move the inflatable rescue boat shed and shelter area closer to the fire station.
  • Re-landscape the reserve to improve pedestrian connections and re-plant it with native coastal species.
  • Improve the rubbish facilities at the reserve to improve sense of arrival at a serene coastal setting.
  • The toilet block needs an upgrade and currently sits in a low point in the reserve, creating flooding issues. It is proposed to relocate it and replace the effluent field which does not cope with the usage over the summer period. You can see the new proposed location on the concept plan.

So far we've posted letters to approximately 450 residents and property owners in Whangapoua and held two community meetings. Feedback is open until Friday 3 May 2019, so please tell us what you think by then.
