Getting ready to celebrate - Whitianga town centre completion

10 July 2019

We're less than a week out from our celebrations to mark the completion of stage two of the Whitianga town centre upgrade.

Bring the family and head along to the fabulous new waterfront playground at  11am this Saturday, 13 July, for our opening party, which includes a free sausage sizzle and ice creams for children, thanks to Coromandel's More FM.

"This is a celebration to thank the community and businesses for their patience throughout stage two of the town centre upgrade, which started in May. Works involved creating a new playground and footpath at the Esplanade, and improvements to the lower end of Taylors Mistake, including the beautification of the stream edge of Carina Creek," says our Mayor Sandra Goudie.

Roading improvements at Campbell Street and Albert Street

Roading improvements at the intersection at Campbell Street and Albert Street are starting in the next two weeks.

The busy intersection is used by the majority of traffic entering and exiting Whitianga. The Mercury Bay Community Board agreed the preferred option is to install a four-legged intersection with a mini-roundabout that will improve saftey and be easily understood by drivers.

Construction drawings are being issued in the next two days. We have a contract in place with Dempsey Wood to start construction in two weeks once the traffic management plan is approved. We will keep the community informed about the work on our Facebook page.
