Competitive archers from around the Pacific will be descending on Whitianga to compete in the Commonwealth Continental Championships and Oceania Continental Championships next week.

Up to 40 athletes and officials from Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia and Tahiti are participating in the championships at the Whitianga Waterways Arena from Tuesday 06 November, through to Friday 09 November.

An opening ceremony is being held at the Whitianga Waterways Complex on Tuesday evening from 5.30pm till 7.00pm which media are invited to attend. There’ll be an official powhiri from iwi and a blessing by community leaders. This is also a chance for athletes to meet and mingle with locals. The ceremony has been organised with help from our Council, Sport Waikato, Whitianga Waterways Ltd and Mercury Bay Archery Club.

Competition begins at the Waterways Arena grounds off State Highway 25 on Wednesday morning with medal matches taking place on the Friday.

“Friday will be the best day for spectators as this is when the finals are held and competition heats up as athletes go  head to head, country against country,” explains President of Mercury Bay Archery Club and Convenor of the Athletes Commission Karen Moffatt-McLeod.

“We’ve arranged a coffee cart and snacks for anyone who wants to come down and see the athletes in action,” says Mrs Moffatt-McLeod. “There’ll also be a compere who’ll be on a loud speaker explaining to the public how competition is run.”

The medal ceremony will be held on Saturday night at The Lost Spring in Whitianga, with specials guests Sir Michael Fay and Lady Sarah Fay.

In January 2013 up to 150 Archers from New Zealand, Oceania as well as the UK, USA, Europe & South Africa will be in Whitianga to compete in the New Zealand National Archery Championships & Open."

National Championships aim to cater for all archers regardless of skill level and it's hoped as many archers as possible attend to enjoy the fun, friendship and competition.

"Many of these competitors will be bringing family and friends and there will also be a team of officials and volunteers running the event, so there is a strong captured market for any sponsors and advertisers. We are also inviting members of the Bow Hunters Association and the NZFAA (NZ Field Archers Association) to join us," she says.

"We want to make both these events successful and memorable for all concerned so that we have the opportunity to host more events of this level in the future."
