Building and Planning Consent Christmas processing times

06 December 2016

If you submit a resource or building consent after Tuesday 20 December it won't be processed until Tuesday 10 January 2017 due to the Christmas/ New Year break.

This is because under the Resource Management Act 1991 and the Building Act 2004 the statutory processing clock stops over Christmas and New Year.

The period between 20 December 2016 and 10 January 2017 is excluded from the 20 working day time-frame.

So if you are thinking about submitting a building or resource consent get in touch with our customer team here to talk over any lodgement criteria and to avoid disappointments.

Building boom results in big increase in resource and building consents

Our planning and building control staff are working flat out to process a big increase in the number of applications for resource and building consents, but are sometimes falling short of meeting our 20-day processing target for building consents.

  • Subdivision certifications - up 44% since 1 July compared to same period last year
  • Resource consents - up 23%
  • Building consents - up 12%
  • New houses and other buildings - up 30%

This high demand for housing and other development comes during a chronic shortage of skilled planning and building consent staff nationally. We are competing with councils across the country to both retain existing staff and recruit new staff.

Four vacancies on our planning team have been filled but not all the new hires can start immediately, and we currently have six vacancies on our building team. We hope to be up to full strength early in the new year but in the meantime we expect building consents and customer inquiries to continue to increase.

"We'd like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding during this time," says our Community Environment Manager Barry Smedts. "I'd like people to know we are working very hard to remedy this situation and we hope to be meeting our targets for processing these applications very soon."

You can keep track of how we're meeting our building consent timeframes here on our Apply for a Building Consent web page. We'll be updating this page every month.
