Whangamata tourism information service

Have you got a passion for tourism and an interest in promoting Whangamata and the wider Coromandel to visitors? If so, we want to hear from you.

We're looking for a credible provider (either not-for-profit or commercial) who has the capability and enthusiasm to deliver tourism information services in the Whangamata community.

Before responding, please make sure that you have read the call for Registrations of Interest (ROI) in full and understand our requirements.

Then use the Response Form in responding to our ROI. It is important that you do not change the structure (section headings and sequence). The Coromandel is home to six tourism information service providers, which includes four information centres in Whangamata, Tairua, Pauanui and Coromandel Town and two accredited i-sites in Thames and Whitianga.

After five years, the current operators of the Whangamata Info Plus Visitor Centre, Enterprise Whangamata have decided to cease management from 30 June 2019, which provides an opportunity for a new organisation or business to run the tourism information service in Whangamata.

"We want to thank Enterprise Whangamata for the fantastic job they have done in managing the running of the Info Plus Centre and understand their need to focus on other opportunities for the businesses they represent," says Erin Bates, our District Manager, South.

If you are interested in taking on the running of the visitor information services in Whangamata, you will need a good track record of providing a friendly, reliable customer service, and consistently seeking ways to improve services, including looking at alternative funding streams. 

Services to be considered:

  • Providing visitors with local information via multiple mediums (including verbal, electronic or print) to facilitate tourism and generate revenue into the region.
  • Providing an area to display posters of upcoming events.
  • Providing booking services for local, district and regional accommodation, attractions, activities, tours and local transport.
  • Promoting the Coromandel area and the wider Thames-Coromandel District capitalising on existing communication, marketing and promotional material, along with other relevant mediums.
  • Support and promote any local initiative that will build on our Council's vision that 'the Coromandel will be the most desirable area of New Zealand in which to live, work and visit'.

We want to hear from anyone with interest in retaining this service, either within the current model or a variation - this could mean the service is run as part of an existing retail or service business, or at the Council-owned site at 616 Port Road, Whangamata. We are open to your ideas.

The day-to-day management of all the visitor centres and i-SITEs is the responsibility of the service provider, with Council providing a set amount of funding through a service level agreement.
