Start at the Tairua Information Centre or across the road at the information sign on the Main Road of Tairua. The Pepe Playground is located on the waterfront here. Stroll alongside the estuary for calming views out to the harbour and Tairua Bar beyond. This is a grassed area with no footpath, and there are signs detailing the birdlife found in Paku Bay. The walk continues across the Manaia Causeway Bridge and to the right, past toilets and a freedom camping area opposite Tairua Surf Club. From here, continue past the ancient Pohutukawa trees where one of the oldest Maori artefacts found in New Zealand (now housed at Auckland Museum) was uncovered, on to Tairua Esplanade (more toilets located here). Choose to continue up Paaku if you're feeling energetic or visit the Tairua Ocean Beach before returning to town.
