Animals, Poultry, Bees and Wasps
The Animal Nuisance Bylaw - Ture-ā-Rohe Kararehe Pōrearea 2019
The keeping of most animals, poultry and bees is managed under The Animal Nuisance Bylaw - Ture-ā-Rohe Kararehe Pōrearea 2019. This bylaw aims to manage the effects of, or behaviour associated with the keeping of these animals in the Thames-Coromandel District so that they do not create a nuisance or endanger the health of the public.
Any person keeping, or permitting to be kept, bees, poultry and other animals as defined in the Animal Nuisance Bylaw on private land, must always ensure that the animals:
- Do not cause or are unlikely to cause a nuisance to any person; and
- Are kept in conditions which are not offensive or injurious to public health and safety; and
- Do not damage any property belonging to any other person.

Wasp control
What can you do if you find a wasp hive/nest?
If you find a wasp hive/nest in one of our parks, reserves, playgrounds or buildings, please contact us immediately and we will arrange for it to be destroyed.
If you find a hive/nest on Department of Conservation land, you can contact them to arrange disposal.
The Waikato Regional Council is responsible for pest management in our region. While they don't run eradication programmes for wasps, they can order someone to destroy hives and nests if a complaint is made.
