Here's a selection of our most frequently asked questions.


How do I become a member of the Library?

It's super simple. For more information go to our Join The Library page.


What is the standard loan period?

In a nutshell, one week for DVDs and magazines - and three weeks for all other items (books, talking books, children's items). Full details are on our Loan Periods and Charge page.


How many items can I borrow at once?

You can have up to 20 items out on your card.


How do I reserve a book?

You can either ask a staff member to do it for you or you can do it yourself online right here.

Reserves cost $1 each.


How can I return a book?

During library opening hours return items to the returns counter inside any of the three libraries. When the libraries are closed, return items through the after-hours returns facilities at any of the three libraries.


How much is it to rent a DVD?

$2.50 for one week. This includes adults' and children's DVD sets with multiple disks inside one container/case.

While you're browsing, you may find a few DVDs with 'no charge' stickers on the cover. These have been donated by some of our generous patrons. These DVDs are free to borrow for one week.


I have a fine to pay! How can I pay it?

You can pay in person at your library (we take cash and EFTPOS, but not credit cards), or you can pay via internet banking - there's more information about TCDC's internet banking details here. You can also read about our loan periods and charges here.


Is the Internet available on Library computers?

Yes, all the district libraries provide free internet access through APNK. You are required to book a time slot to use the library computers. Each person is allowed to use a library computer for half an hour per day; if you think you'll need longer than half an hour (to complete a CV or fill in a tax return, for example), please ask a library staff member for a time extension before your session begins.


How do I report a lost Library card?

Can I access the library catalogue from a smart phone or tablet?

Yes! Our app is called TCDC Libraries and it's available for Android and Apple devices. Manage your account, search the catalogue, renew and reserve books. TCDC Libraries also has a handy ISBN scanning function - no more impulse-buying at the book shops; simply scan the bar code and see if the library has a copy you can borrow.

TCDC Libraries replaces our previous app, Kotui Bookmyne. 


 

How do I check my library account? Can I renew items or place holds online?

Yes! Log into your account via our online catalogue right here! Click the 'Log In' button in the top right corner. You'll need your library card user ID (that's the number under the barcode on the back of your library card) and your password.


What if the library doesn't have the book I want?

We may still be able to get it in for you as an inter-library loan. Our interloan service allows you to borrow books from other libraries around New Zealand. Interloans start from $6.00 per item, and you'll need to fill in a short form at one of our libraries. You can look up the thousands of books available to you nationwide through our interloan service on Te Puna's catalogue.

 


 

Does the Library do photocopying?

A photocopier is available. The cost is 20 cents per page (black and white) for an A4 or $1.00 for black and white A3. A4 colour is $1.00, or $2.00 for A3 colour.Staff can help you though.


How do I know when my items are due back?

Retain the printed list from when the items were issued.  
Surf to our catalogue and check your library account on a library computer, or at home or work. You'll need to log in to your account using your library card number and your PIN.


Can I borrow books from other libraries?

Yes! Thames Library, Mercury Bay Library and Tairua Library are all branches of Thames-Coromandel District Libraries, so your card can be used in all three libraries.

You'll also see books on our online catalogue at Whangamata and Pauanui Community Libraries. These are volunteer-run libraries which are not part of our District Libraries network, and therefore have differnt rules to us.

Pauanui Community Library do not lend to District Libraries members.

Whangamata Community Library will allow books that are not part of their Pay collections to be reserved by District Libraries members; all you need to do is reserve your book to pick up at your local  library branch.

Coromandel Community Library is currently adding records for their collection items to our online catalogue. Please contact them directly if you'd like to find out more about their future plans.

You are, of course, welcome to have memberships at multiple libraries at one time; find out more about the peninsula's Community Libraries here.

Library cards from other districts (like Hauraki District, for example) do not work in our district. But you're welcome to join us.

You can also interloan items from other libraries around New Zealand for a charge of $6.00. See 'What if the library doesn't have the book I want?' above.


Can I recommend the Library buys a book?

Absolutely! Most of the time, (though not every time) we buy books you recommend. Use our Suggestion for Purchase Online Form to make a recommendation.


What are the debt collection fees?

The Library adds a $10 non-refundable debt administration fee at the time of referring the debt to a collection agency. After that, all charges incurred in the recovery of a debt are added to the total and are paid by the debtor.


What is available on the Library computers?

Our APNK Chrome Books and Chrome Stations provide access to:

  • The Library Catalogue 
  • Ancestry Library Edition
  • Internet (a few sites are blocked) 
  • Google apps such as Gmail, Docs, YouTube, and more. You'll need an account with Google to access them.
  • Shortcuts to Microsoft apps such as Word, Outlook, OneDriveand more. You'll need an account with Microsoft to access them.
  • USB ports
  • Our printer - it costs $0.20 to print in black and white, and $1.00 to print in colour

If you need help using the computers, let our staff know. In Thames, you can book a one-on-one session with a technology expert.


Is Wi-Fi available in the library?

Yes. You can use your laptop or smartphone to access the libraries' Wi-Fi network. This works just outside of our buildings as well as inside the libraries.


Do you have meeting rooms I can hire?

Yes, we have a meeting room at Thames Library (the Carnegie Room). The room has chairs, tables, curtains for privacy, a white board, access to a projector on request, and a kitchenette. It's free to hire if you're a non-profit group. For commercial users, we charge $25.00 per half day and $40.00 for a full day. Contact Thames Library directly to book.


I can't make it to the library any more. What can I do now?

Our Housebound service delivers hand-picked books and audiobooks directly to our elderly and infirm clients. Volunteers will visit you regularly at home, with a selection of library books to suit your tastes and needs. Contact your local library to find out about signing up to receive this service.
