The Coromandel Town Centre upgrade
has been completed.

Information on the upgrade

The revitalisation of the Coromandel Town Centre is being enjoyed by many locals, including Zeus the superstar horse and our Mayor Sandra Goudie.

“The improvements have given the town some TLC,” says Mayor Sandra. “This town reflects so much history of our Coromandel pioneering times, there’s no better way for me to celebrate the finish by riding a local horse down the main street – which is how they used to do it back in the day,” says Mayor Sandra.

Coromandel locals are also pleased with the facelift of the town’s main street, enjoying the new street seating, crossings, and traffic flow improving at the newly built roundabout through Tiki Rd, Kapanga Rd, and Whard Road.

The works involved changing the old T-intersection there to a small mountable roundabout, which allows larger vehicles to drive over it. The Kapanga Road pedestrian crossing has been moved to opposite Samuel James Reserve.

A threshold crossing has also been installed at the northern end of town, along with road cobble stones, opposite the Hauraki House Reserve.

The roading improvements also included reducing the camber of the road along Kapanga Road from Charles Street through to the Karaka Stream bridge by the Hauraki Reserve, from 10 per cent to approximately three per cent, to prevent damage to building verandas and making it easier for vehicles to park and to enter and exit the road.

Nine new seats have also been installed in the town centre, around the existing pohutakawa trees.

The stormwater infrastructure along the main street was upgraded at the same time.

Pottery Lane extension

Separate to the Coromandel Town Centre Upgrade, Pottery Lane will be extended to reduce commercial traffic on Kapanga Road, which is expected to reduce congestion around the town centre.

This is one of the major decisions our elected members made after consultation in the 2018-2018 Long Term Plan, and will cost $2.2 million.
