A section of Council-owned land at 90 Moewai Road in Whitianga known as the ‘Sherriff Block’ is being developed, largely for recreation purposes.

Thank you to all those who submitted feedback on our proposals. Keep an eye on this website for futher details as the project progresses. And, you can have news on this project, and other Council activities, sent directly to your email inbox by subscribing to our e-newsletters at

There is potential for equestrian use, a speedway, a motorcross facility, concert venue, an outdoor entertainment area (for circuses, markets, fairs, festivals, competitions and more), walkways, stormwater management/wetlands area, water-based sports, and an extension to the adjacent airfield.

See the proposed concept plan below for an idea of what the layout could look like.

Existing users of the land, including the Coromandel Rescue Helicopter Trust and the Whitianga Scouts, would remain. Recent changes to government funding and location arrangements for rescue helicopter services don’t affect our Council’s lease arrangement with the Coromandel Rescue Helicopter Trust.

Our Council and Greenstone Entertainment Ltd have agreed a Licence to Occupy for a venue on the Sherriff Block for the Whitianga Summer Concert, which is held annually on Auckland Anniversary weekend. This would form part of the development.

An access road is included along the western boundary of the site where it borders the wastewater treatment plant.

Work to implement the finalised plan would take place over a 10-year period.

Council bought the land, at 90 Moewai Road, in 2000 from the Sherriff family as a potential site for recreation, extension to the neighbouring wastewater treatment plant and a possible extension to the Whitianga airfield.

Since then, the land has been used for grazing, with a portion set aside for the Coromandel Rescue Helicopter Trust and the Whitianga Scouts.

There are currently no plans that require the wastewater treatment facility to expand beyond the area it currently occupies.  This gives our Council the opportunity to consider the community needs that have been expressed and to look at multi-use opportunities that could be implemented in this location over the next 10 years.
