Freedom Camping Bylaw Review

We are reviewing our freedom camping bylaw. Public consultation is open now. Submissions can be made from 11 December - 2 February 2021.

Our bylaw is up for review this summer. Consultation is now open and submissions can be made from 11 December 2020 to 02 February 2021. 

This review is not intended to rewrite the entire bylaw but to assess where freedom camping is currently allowed or restricted.

The Proposal

The Council is proposing the following changes to the Freedom Camping Bylaw:

  • re-naming the bylaw to Responsible Freedom Camping Bylaw.
  • increasing and/or moving the designated areas of eight currently restricted sites.
  • one site is proposed to change its classification from restricted to prohibited and;
  • one site is proposed to change its classification from prohibited to restricted.

Making a Submission

When you make a submission, make sure you have told us:

  • which proposed ammendments you are submitting on
  • what decision you would like made
  • the reasons for your submission, and
  • whether you wish to be heard by Council

  • post it to Thames-Coromandel District Council, Private Bag, Thames
  • email it to consultation@tcdc.govt.nz 
  • deliver it one of the council offices in Thames, Coromandel Town, Whitianga or Whangamata
Grounds for Making a Submission

You cannot make a submission based on a dislike of freedom camping in general. Only submissions based around criteria set in the act will be accepted such as:

  • A freedom camping spot blocking a public access
  • Health and Safety risk
  • Damage to the surrounding environment i.e., Flaura and Fauna
Hearing

If a submitter wants to present their submission at a hearing, they must tell us and provide contact details. We will contact all those who have indicated they wish to be heard after the submission period has closed. The hearing is scheduled for March 2021.
