Fencing of spa and swimming pools
Any pool filled to more than 400mm depth must be fenced
Why do pools or spa pools need to be fenced?
The Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987 requires all owners to fence their swimming pool or spa pool to ensure young children are prevented access to the pool. The Act specifies which standards the pool fences are required to meet.
Does your fence comply with the Act?
Have you taken extra precautions?
-
Check the fence and gate are in good condition.
-
Make sure adults and children know they must NEVER prop open the gate to the pool.
-
Make sure there are no items near the fence which a child could use to climb over.
-
Set rules of behaviour in and around the pool.
-
Learn first aid and resuscitation techniques – just in case!
-
Clear away toys and flotation aids when they are not being used.
-
Have a non-slip surface surrounding the pool.
-
Store pool chemicals securely.
Do you have to contact Council?
Yes, if you intend to build a swimming pool, you must contact
Council for a building consent and don't forget to include your plans for the building of a fence around the pool – you will be asked for them.
