There had been a strong desire from within the community to prepare a Community Plan for the Tairua area. This was initiated at a meeting held on the 1st February 2005 and the process considered and incorporated where appropriate information from the Draft Tairua Town Theme and Plan prepared in 1998/99.
Tairua has a special, unique character, surrounded by the harbour and Paku Hill, the sea, and the rugged forested ranges. Tourism is important but Tairua is not just a resort town and there is a strong resident community here that plays a significant role in the town.
The Community Plan has now been 19 months in development and has followed a thorough consultation process. The plan will be the primary resource for the ongoing management, planning and future development of the Tairua Community, and was endorsed by Thames-Council District Council on the 29 November 2006.
