The names of those eligible to vote in the election appear on the Electoral Roll, when it closes.

The electoral roll comprises both the Resident Electoral Roll (electors enrolled on a Parliamentary Roll) and the Ratepayer Electoral Roll (non-resident electors with a property in the district).

The electoral rolls, one for each community, are available for public inspection at Council offices, service centres, libraries and post shops within the district.

Hard copies of the electoral roll can be purchased from the Electoral Office.

Residential Electoral Roll

If you are on the Parliamentary electoral roll, you will automatically be on the local authority Residential Electoral Roll. A confirmation card will be posted to everyone on the electoral roll during July/August in the year of the election.

If you are not on the Parliamentary roll, or if you need to make changes to your details (address, etc.), you can do so by:

  • Completing the appropriate form at any post shop; or
  • Telephoning 0800 ENROLNOW (0800 367 656); or
  • Accessing the Electoral Enrolment Centre website on http://www.elections.org.nz/

Ratepayer Electoral Roll

If a person is on the Parliamentary Roll in one area and pays rates on a property in another area, they may be eligible to be enrolled on the Ratepayer Electoral Roll.

A firm, company, corporation or society paying rates on a property, may nominate one of its members or officers as a ratepayer elector (providing the nominated person resides outside of the area).

Therefore you can be enrolled within a local authority area once as a residential elector AND you can qualify to enrol in another local authority if:

a)  You pay rates in a residential property within that
     area; or
b)  You pay rates on a business property within that
     area; or
c)  You have been nominated to vote in relation to
     a property in that area.

If you qualify as a ratepayer elector, you may apply at any time to be on the Ratepayer Electoral Roll.

Prior to each election, each person on the Ratepayer Electoral Roll will be sent an enrolment confirmation form which must be completed and returned, if you wish to remain on the roll.

Click here to download the Enrolment Form for Ratepayer Electors in PDF format. Alternatively, copies of the enrolment form are available at the Council offices, service centres and libraries.

Council's Electoral Office (0800 922 822) should be notified of any changes to be made to the Ratepayer Electoral Roll.
