Function
The function of Council's Policy Planning and Group is to develop and maintain an appropriate policy framework that reflects Council's strategic priorities. It will also ensure that all Council's activities are carried out in accordance with the policy framework. The Group also has a strong focus on community engagement and consultation and community planning.
The Group has a significant role in preparing and assisting with the implementation of key organisational strategic documents, including: Long-Term council Community Plan, District Plan, Community Plans, Development Contribution Policy and Policy for the Measurement and Reporting of Organisational Performance.
A major activity of the group is to maintain an effective District Plan that provides for the sustainable management of the District's environment in consultation with key stakeholders and the community and then monitoring and reviewing the tangible results of the District Plan to ensure that policies are achieving the expected goals.
Council will advocate its position with respect to other agencies' policy initiatives, such as the Waikato Regional Policy Statement, and reviews of key statutes such as the Resource Management Act 1991 and the local Government Act 2002. Council will also be involved in inter-agency initiatives such as the Hauraki Gulf Forum, and the Group will assist in these initiatives.
The Group will also assist Council to defend its environmental policies from time to time before the Environment Court in respect of decisions that it has made in respect of the District Plan review process.
