Freedom Camping in Public Places

Freedom camping is not currently permitted on the Peninsula.

If you wish to camp in the District, it is recommended that you contact a local i-site or Council office for suitable locations. Suitable locations include registered camping grounds or Department of Conservation (DoC) camp sites.

This map identifies the locations around the district where camping is permitted. For more detail on the camping ground or DoC site please refer to the Online Web Map and select the Camping layer from the drop list at the bottom of the page. Then zoom in for a veiw of the camp and surrounding area.

It is recommended that you book your accomodation early if you intend to camp during the peak summer season. However in general it is likely that a DoC camp site will be able to accomodate a campervan for a short period of time if the camping ground you propose to stay at is unable to accomodate you.

If you are found camping in a public place, you may be liable for the following penalties

  • An instant parking fine of $40
  • The vehicle being seized.
  • A maximum fine of $20,000 following prosecution under the bylaw.

In order to avoid the above penalities and to ensure that you enjoy your stay on the peninsula please ensure that you always camp in an area set aside for the purpose of camping (e.g. camping ground or DoC camping ground).
