Bylaws exist for the following reasons:
- To protect the public from nuisance;
- To protect, promote and maintain public health and safety;
- To minimise the potential for offensive behaviour in public places.
- Bylaws are enforceable and are enforced by Council staff such as monitoring officers, resource consent officers and environmental health inspection officers. Breaches of bylaws can result in prosecutions and Court-imposed fines, confiscations of equipment or orders to stop work.
Thames-Coromandel District Council are currently reviewing all bylaws and making one consolidated bylaw which is made up of a number of parts (or individual bylaws).
