In February/March 2007 affected property owners were sent a letter advising that Council was beginning the process of refining/amending the natural hazard (river flooding and coastal erosion) provisions of the Thames-Coromandel District Plan.
Informal consultation, including community open days, was carried out with affected landowners on updated flood modelling work that had been prepared by Environment Waikato for 14 catchments/communities on the Coromandel Peninsula. Draft District Plan provisions had also been prepared and feedback was sought on both the flood modeling and the proposed changes to the District Plan.
As a result of the comments received during the consultation process, additional work has been carried out to address some of the concerns raised by the community with regard to both the robustness of the flood modelling and the extent of the proposed land-use controls.
The flood modelling has been simplified from five categories to three (being ‘Low’, ‘Medium’ and ‘High Flood Hazards’) and each modelled catchment is accompanied by a River Flood Hazard Assessment report which fully explains the methodology behind the flood hazard map.
Work is currently underway on amending the draft plan change to reflect the amended technical information and the comments received during the consultation in early 2007.
